The Reserve Bank governor of India is the Chief Executive Officer of the Central Bank of India and the ex-officio Chairman of its Central Board of Directors.
The Indian note issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) carries the signature of the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
Since its inception in 1935 by the British government, 25 people have worked as RBI governors till date.
The first governor of the Reserve Bank of India was the British banker, Osborne Smith, while CD Deshmukh was the rbi first governor (first Indian governor of the Reserve Bank of India.)
Currently, the Governor of Reserve Bank of India is Shashikant Das,(new governor of rbi) who assumed office on 12 December 2018.

1. The longest working person as Governor of Reserve Bank of India was Benegal Rama Rao. He was working in his post from July 1, 1949, to January 14, 1957, for a total of 7 years, 197 days.
2. The shortest working person as Governor of Reserve Bank of India was Amitabh Ghosh. He was in his post for a total of 20 days from 15 January 1985 to 4 February 1985.
Salary Of RBI Governor
Above we have mention list of rbi governor of India. Now let know the Salary Of RBI Governor of India. There has been a huge increase in the salary of deputy governors along with Reserve Bank Governor.
The government has increased its basic salary by more than double. Urjit Patel’s basic salary has been increased to Rs 2.5 lakh and that of the deputy governor to Rs 2.25 lakh.
This change is effective from January 1, 2016. Prior to this increase, the basic salary of the Reserve Bank Governor was Rs 90000 / month while the basic salary of his deputy governor was Rs 80,000 / month.
The monthly salary of these top RBI officials includes basic pay, dearness allowance (DA) and other payments.
And all these together, till November 30, 2016, Urjit Patel received a total salary of Rs 2,09,500 / month.
The dearness allowance of Central employees is extended from time to time by the Central Government.
Whereas all other allowances will be paid at the prevailing rates. Before the increase, Patel used to get Rs 1,12,500 DA along with 90 thousand basic salary and Rs 7000 under other allowances.
Thus his total monthly salary would have been Rs 2,09,500. Taking only the increase in the basic salary, it increases his salary to about Rs 3.70 lakh.
However, despite this increase, the salary of the governor and the deputy governor is much lower than the top officials of other big banks.
The post of Governor of the Reserve Bank is that of a Class 1 officer and the salary he receives includes the following benefits:
- Basic Pay: ₹ 90,000 / – Annual Increase ₹ 1,600 / –
- Grade Allowance: ₹ 10,000 / –
3. Monthly Reimbursement
- Educational: ₹ 2,000 / –
- Household expenses: ₹ 4,000 / –
- Telephone bill: ₹ 3,500 / –
4. Conveyance allowance: (monthly)
- Petrol: 270 liters, Other: ₹ 6,000 / -, +30 liters for metros
- Driver’s Allowance: ₹ 7,000 / –
- Car Maintenance Allowance: ₹ 2,500 / –
5. Government Car and Home (AC)
- Car: Maximum price ₹ 8,00,000 / –
- (AC): Maximum ₹ 20,000 / –
200 units of electricity are given separately by the government to run AC.
If the officer buys up to 8 lakhs tax after getting leave, then he gets financial exemption up to a maximum of 50,000.
6. Annual Reimbursement
- Medicine: ₹ 5,500 / –
- Book grant: ₹ 7,000 / –
- Briefcase: ₹ 9,000 / –
In a nutshell, it can be said that now the salary of the Governor of the Reserve Bank has been given due to the importance of his work.
But it is still expected to improve if compared to the salary of the top executives of private banks.
