Advantages Of Dams
Dams and reservoirs contribute significantly to fulfilling the following human basic needs: –
Properly designed and well-constructed dams use the accumulated water in reservoirs more frequently to meet the drinking water needs and industrial needs of the people.
Dams and reservoirs a construction can use the excess water during the rainy season for irrigation on dry land.
These types of schemes are helpful in preventing terrible danger like floods.
Electricity is produced from the water collected in the dam.
Energy plays an important role in the socio-economic development of the country. Hydropower is a cheap, clean and renewable source of energy.
The construction of the dam presents the surrounding area as beautiful as a lake, which becomes a source of recreation.
Apart from this, people can also take advantage of boating, swimming, fishing, etc. from the lake.
Problems Caused By Dams
Due to the construction of a dam on the river, the flow of river water is interrupted.
The dam splits river branches, which move the vegetation in the water.
Vegetation is submerged in the water reservoirs created in the floodplain and the soil is decomposed.
Multipurpose projects and large dams have become the birthplace of Narmada Bachao Andolan and Tehri Dam movement because people had to flee their homes due to these.
Many species of fish are killed due to the water being stagnated in dams causing damage to aquatic biodiversity.
Malaria bacteria grow in the water of stagnant reservoirs. Which increase the diseases of the people living in the area near the reservoir.
The leaves, twigs and animal corpses in the reservoir of the dam are frozen and begin to rot.
They do not get oxygen at the bottom of the pond due to which methane gas is produced which increases global warming more than carbon dioxide.
